I want to donate books to a project that is aiming to provide every child in a local elementary school with 2 books at the end of the school year. Children's books are not my area of expertise, so I need your suggestions. If you were to buy two books for a child, Pre-K to Grade 6, what two books would you buy? Leave your suggestions in the comments and please indicate grade and/or reading level.
I challenge you to find a way to do something like this in your own community. How cool would it be to receive books for summer reading, especially if you live in a home where reading isn't a common activity or where books are an expense that can't fit into the family budget.

Grade 2 & 3: Ramona the Pest by Beverly Cleary
Grade 5 & 6: The Phantom Tollbooth by Norton Juster
Hi, just some paperback series I happen to know about:
The Hank Zipzer series... about a kid with "learning challenges", good for kids who don't necessarily like to read, grades 3-5.
The Katie Kazoo, Switcheroo series... short reads with a fantastical element, grades 2-4.
The Dragon Slayers' Academy series... fantasy for kids who may not be old enough for Harry Potter, grades 2-4.

Oh, Cam, there is too much to think about here. A lovely idea and a rich, rich field to pursue.
I'm immersed in pre-K at the moment, so I'll stay there. I'm thinking of gorgeous books that repay rereading and that are not too much about boys or girls:
_Sylvester and the Magic Pebble_ by William Steig
_Corduroy_ by Don Freeman
and collections of poetry. I like John Hollander's selection of Animal Poems.
_In the Night Kitchen_ by Maurice Sendak
_The Carrot Seed_ by Ruth Krauss
so many, many more!!!
Thanks for the great suggestions. I mostly bought books for older children as that was were the greatest need was for this particular project. It was fun selecting them.
